About Us
46 years old and still going strong!
A short history
Dunfermline Sound began in 1976 with 22 listeners, each receiving a fortnightly 60 minute Tape. Then we changed to a weekly 90 minute Tape Cassette plus a Magazine added once a month. In 2008 we changed to MP3 CDs which went out to over 120 blind or partially sighted people. Memory Sticks were gradually introduced and the CDs phased out completely in 2023. This service, available to the visually impaired, is greatly appreciated as it allows listeners to keep in touch with local news and events. The weekly Memory Stick can be listened to all the way through in one session or "dipped" into by prudent use of the "forward" and "back" keys. We used to have a monthly magazine covering gardening, healthy eating, heritage, sports reports, travel talks, religious spot to name but a few. It was introduced in 1990 and proved to be very popular and had regular feedback from our listeners. This magazine was added to our Dunfermline Press News at the beginning of each month except January but we stopped issuing the Magazine in 2012 after losing the editor so if anyone knows of a volunteer who may be willing to take over that post, please let us know.
How it works
Each Thursday, copies of the Dunfermline Press are taken to our studio to enable volunteers to read news which is recorded onto a computer and then onto a master Memory Stick.
Individual copies are then made for every listener. These are inserted into special postal wallets with the listener's name and address and taken to the Royal Mail Sorting Office for delivery with Friday's mail. This real time news is rare in the Talking Newspaper Services.
Our listeners simply reverse the address label on the wallet and post it free of charge back to Dunfermline Sound ready for the next edition.
